Occupy Central ‘will harm HK’

Chinese vice-president Li Yuanchao has been quoted as saying that the planned ‘Occupy Central’ Movement would harm Hong Kong’s prosperity and stability, and that Beijing ‘firmly opposes’ the civil disobedience campaign.
The state leader reportedly made the comments during a closed-door meeting in Beijing with a group of senior journalists from Hong Kong.
After the talks, the head of the Newspaper Society of Hong Kong, Lee Cho-jat, quoted Li Yuanchao as saying that the civil disobedience act would hinder the city’s democratisation, and impair its stability and prosperity.
He said Li had reiterated the Central Government’s position that universal suffrage must fall within the framework of the Basic Law and relevant decisions of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress, and future Chief Executives must love the country and love Hong Kong.
The vice-president, who’s in charge of overseeing Hong Kong affairs, also said growing animosity between mainlanders and Hong Kong people is a result of rapid development on the Mainland, and that Hong Kong should continue to develop its facilities to keep up.
He also called on Hong Kong’s media to report on the benefits brought by the Mainland’s economic development in an «objective, fair, balanced and rational» manner.
