Have Americans become too obedient?
«The problem today isn’t civil disobedience, it is civil obedience.» This statement is currently being sent viral on Reddit. It’s part of a speech first delivered by deceased historian Howard Zinn at Johns’ Hopkins University in 1970. It was revived by Matt Damon in a performance at the Metro in Chicago on January 31, 2012 (video below). The quote evidently has a long shelf life, because hundreds of Reddit users are currently debating it.
«The problem today isn’t civil disobedience, it is civil obedience,» said Matt Damon to loud cheers. «Our problem is the numbers of people all over the world who have obeyed the dictates of the leaders of their government and have gone to war, and millions have been killed because of this obedience.»
